Most people walk out with a great deal. But here’s what most shoppers and donors don’t know: Every dollar they spend and every item they donate is directly funding job training, workforce development, and community support programs for people right here in Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio.

This is not a story about a far-off national organization. This is a story about your community — and the life-changing work happening in it every single day, powered by the purchases and donations made by neighbors just like you.

Most people genuinely have no idea about our mission programs. That’s exactly why this story needs to be told.

What Your Purchase Actually Funds

Busting Common Myths About Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio

Despite being one of the most recognized nonprofit brands in America, Goodwill is frequently misunderstood. We’ve heard all of these myths in our communities. Here’s the real story — because you deserve the full truth about the organization you support.

The Myth: “Goodwill executives are pocketing the donations.”

The Truth: Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio is a nonprofit. Executive compensation is determined by an independent, unpaid local board of directors. Most of the money we get is put right into our mission programs.

The Myth: “They just resell donated items for profit.”

The Truth: Selling donated goods is our funding model — not our end goal. The revenue from our stores is exactly what makes free job training, career coaching, and community support programs possible across Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio. The store is how we fund the mission. The mission is why the store exists.

The Myth: “Goodwill charges too much for donated stuff.”

The Truth: Our pricing reflects the real operational costs of running stores that double as community resources — staffing, sorting, cleaning, pricing, and facility costs. These same operations support the people we employ and the programs we fund. Our prices are still far below retail, and we offer regular discount days and rotating sale events.

The Myth: “Most of what people donate gets thrown away.”

The Truth: We work hard to find a purpose for every donation. Items not sold in our primary stores are sent to outlet locations or sold in bulk to certified textile recyclers. Unusable but safe items are donated to community partners. Our Goodwill diverts millions of pounds of goods from regional landfills every single year.

The Myth: “Goodwill is a big corporation that doesn’t help local people.”

The Truth: We are a local organization, governed by a local board, staffed by local people, and serving local residents. Every dollar raised across our regional stores stays here — reinvested in our communities. We answer to our neighbors, not a national headquarters.

The Myth: “You have to be in crisis to use Goodwill’s services.”

The Truth: Not at all. Our workforce and career development programs are open to any resident in our region who wants to build new skills, change careers, re-enter the workforce, or simply find a better job. You do not have to be in an emergency to benefit from what we offer.

The Myth: “Goodwill only serves one part of the region.”

The Truth: Our reach spans 10 counties throughout Ohio and West Virginia. We are intentional about serving communities across all kinds of regions — urban, suburban, and rural alike. No matter where you are in our service area, Goodwill Industries is working to serve people near you.

Shining a Light on the Mission Behind Our Brand

At Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, our brand represents something far deeper than a retail store. It represents a promise — a commitment to every person in our region who has ever felt overlooked, underestimated, or left out of economic opportunity.

We are proud of our stores. We are proud of the value they offer shoppers and the resources they divert from landfills. But we are most proud of what they make possible: the first paycheck earned by someone who was told they were unemployable, the mother who finds steady work so her family can stay housed, the veteran who transitions into a career that honors his service, the young person in East Central Ohio who gets their first real shot at a future.

THE PILLARS OF OUR MISSION

Dignity Through Work: We believe every person throughout our region deserves the dignity, independence, and self-worth that comes from meaningful employment. A job is not just an income — it is identity, stability, and pride.

Removing Barriers: We design our programs around real-world obstacles such as criminal records, disabilities, language gaps, lack of childcare, transportation challenges, and more. We meet people where they are and help them move forward from there.

Environmental Stewardship: By giving donated goods a second life, we divert millions of pounds of items from regional landfills each year. Every purchase you make is also a small but real act of sustainability.

Inclusive Opportunity: We serve all people. Regardless of background, age, ability, record, or circumstance, our doors and our programs are open to anyone in our region who is ready to take a step forward.
